Inpatient Care. VA medical teams provide Veterans with a full range of inpatient health care services, from emergency, surgical, and primary medical care to rehabilitative, mental health, and extended care.

Surgical Services. VA surgical teams provide general, specialty, and cardiac surgery services at 157 medical centers across the Nation.

Outpatient Care. Many VA health professionals deliver exceptional care at VA's more than 900 ambulatory and community-based outpatient clinics. Services range from general outpatient care to a variety of medical screenings and preventive health examinations.

Care Team Structure. VA nurses, doctors, physician assistants, pharmacists, mental health providers, and a range of allied health professionals collaborate in interdisciplinary care teams in both inpatient and outpatient settings to provide Veterans with The Best Care possible.

Technology-Based Care. Members of VA care teams use wireless laptops in patient settings to quickly and securely access electronic health records. They have patient histories, lab results, and diagnostic images at their fingertips, and can place orders for tests, prescriptions, and x-rays with a few keystrokes.

Magnet Designation. The James A. Haley Veteran's Hospital in Tampa, Fla., is one of several VA facilities that have earned Magnet status. VA is encouraging all medical center leaders to work toward this designation.

Training. Like so many VA medical centers, the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center in Phoenix, Ariz., is an established training facility. Affiliated with the University of Arizona School of Medicine and many other schools, the medical center offers 73 medical resident positions and a full range of nursing, pharmacy, and allied health training programs.

Staff Education. From student fellows, residents, and trainees to full-time staff members pursuing continuing education, VA provides comprehensive on-site training, as well as numerous scholarship programs to support the attainment of advanced degrees.

Research. The Sacramento VA Medical Center in California is both a 50-bed inpatient hospital and a state-of-the-art research facility with more than 16,000 square feet of laboratory. Some of this facility's research areas include cancer, Alzheimer's Disease, cognitive neuropsychology, liver disease, heart disease, diabetes mellitus, cholesterol, and bone metabolism.

Nursing Excellence. VA nurses – full-time, part-time, and those working in the new VA Travel Nurse Corps are at the bedside and in outpatient clinics working with the entire patient care team to deliver quality care.

Advanced Practice Nursing. VA APNs, including our Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, have a high degree of autonomy within their defined scopes of practice.

High-Tech Dentistry. VA dentists work with today's state-of-the-art dental technologies in more than 200 VA locations, from tertiary care medical centers to community-based health care clinics.

Allied Health Care. VA employs a full range of allied health care professionals, including certified and registered respiratory therapists.

Inpatient Pharmacy. The complex medical conditions within the Veteran patient population challenge VA pharmacists to utilize the full range of their clinical skills every day.

Outpatient Pharmacy. Thanks to VA's integrated network care structure, VA pharmacists are able to practice in a wide range of settings.

Radiology Services. VA radiologists and radiology departments provide Veterans with a complete range of diagnostic imaging modalities using advanced technologies.

Polytrauma Center. The Minneapolis VA Medical Center in Minnesota serves as one of VA's four polytrauma centers, where Veterans with multiple, complex combat injuries seek specialized care to help them achieve optimal function and independence for the rest of their lives.

Spinal Cord Injury. In addition to outpatient and inpatient services, the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in The Bronx, New York, serves as a comprehensive Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) center. A research building attached to the main clinical setting has been recognized for its achievements in developing prosthetic devices for SCI patients, as well as a range of advancements in other research areas.

PTSD. The Spark M. Matsunaga VA Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, is part of the VA Pacific Islands Health Care System, which serves as a center for Veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The system's focus on the disorder includes a PTSD clinical team, a PTSD residential rehabilitation program, and PTSD research.

Physical Therapy. Now more than ever, VA physical therapists are needed to assess and treat a variety of service connected disabilities. At VA, physical therapists are experts in restoring patients to their highest functional level.

Technology. VA health information professionals are at the forefront of developing some of the best medical technologies in the Nation, including our lauded Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS).
