Preventing musculoskeletal injuries from occurring in our nursing staff is a top priority at VA. We collaborate with national nursing and specialty organizations in this quest. Additionally, the VA Patient Safety Center of Inquiry in Tampa, Fla., created the Safe Patient Handling and Movement (SPHM) program, which the VA Office of Nursing Services is championing at VA facilities nationwide. SPHM programs have decreased the number and severity of nursing injuries and increased job satisfaction, along with patient quality of care.
