Duties
Recruitment is open for the Chief Nurse, Mental Health. The individual selected for this position will be accountable to the Associate Director/Patient Care Services for the delivery of nursing care services, management of nursing personnel and resources for designated programs.

Major Responsibilities: The Chief Nurse, Mental Health exhibits leadership that is characterized by substantial and continuous responsibility and accountability for population groups or integrated programs that cross service and/or discipline lines and influence organizational mission and health care. In addition, the Chief Nurse, Mental Health makes significant and sustained contributions to the nursing profession that may include publication, membership on task forces, intramural and extramural committees, consulting, or use of creative approaches to enhance quality of patient care and productivity of providers. The incumbent's nursing practice encompasses developing and implementing programs to improve the quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of patient care.

Activities include, but are not limited, to the following:
  1. Programmatic oversight includes acute inpatient mental health units, STAR Clinic, Acute Mental Health Clinic, TIDES, MICHM, Veteran Recovery Center, and future Mental Health related areas.
  2. Establishment of effective relationships within service and other hospital services.
  3. Establishment of collegial relationships with other leaders in the large health care community.
  4. Acceptance of expanded and continuing responsibility/accountability for planning, implementing and controlling integrated programs.
  5. Making decisions, forecasting requirements necessary for long range planning and model development for effective delivery of health care services.
  6. Facilitating through collaboration the delivery of patient care and assuring the implementation and maintenance of standards for professional practice within the scope of the position.
Additional requirements:
A. BSN from an NLNAC or CCNE accredited program and a master's degree in Nursing or related field from a regionally accredited university.
B. Minimum of five years of professional nursing practice in progressively more responsible leadership assignments in clinical, administrative, educational, and/or research areas.
C. Evidence of significant and sustained contributions to the nursing profession such as publication, membership on task forces, intramural and extramural committees.
D. Demonstrated ability to act autonomously and to seek direction as needed.
E. Demonstrated dynamic leadership skills and a high degree of personal and professional skills.
F. Demonstrated knowledge of patient care management, system redesign, financial management, strategic planning, human resource management, and continuous quality improvement.

Work Schedule: Due to the business operations of the OKC VAHCS, variable work schedules are not appropriate for this position.

      Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

      Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

      Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

      Nurse IV - Master's degree in nursing or related field with MSN and approximately 4-5 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.

      Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.
