Duties

The Physician Assistant (Endocrinology) works in collaboration with and with available guidance and supervision of an Attending Physician(s) in the field of Endocrinology. The primary practice site for Endocrinology is in the Specialty Clinics in Building 17 located on the campus of the Lebanon VA Medical center in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. In addition telemedicine consults are available with each of the five Community Based Outpatient Clinics. Additional duties may also include follow up via electronic media. Incumbent will be responsible for Medical Endocrinology duties which are generally defined as but not limited to:

  • Outpatient management support to include office visits and management of his/her own continuing caseload, as well as support of attendings' patients as needed.
  • Review medical history and conducting a detailed physical exam.
  • Interpreting laboratory and diagnostic results.
  • Diagnosing medical conditions predominantly associated with the field of Endocrinology which is primarily diabetes, thyroid disease, and with opportunity to learn/practice additional endocrinology as desired.
  • Insulin pump support for downloading pumps and continuous glucose monitors.
  • Review and update reconciliation of medications.
  • Future endeavors could also include additional education of primary care providers and further expansion of telemedicine to other sites.
  • In collaboration with a supervising physician, the PA is also authorized to write orders on outpatients acquiring their care at the Lebanon VA medical center.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm, unless otherwise approved. Call will be required.

    • Basic Requirements:
      • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
      • Education. Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations AND a bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.PAs on VA rolls prior to the implementation date of this standard (i.e. September 5, 2014) who do not meet the minimum academic level of a Bachelor's degree are exempted from this requirement.
      • Certification. Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA. PAs on VA rolls prior to March 12, 1993 who are not NCCPA certified remain exempt from the NCCPA certification requirement. However, a PA who subsequently became or becomes certified is no longer exempt and must maintain certification as a condition of employment.
      • English Language Proficiency. PAs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).
